The Basics of Breeding Model Horses
This page was created for those collectors who want to "breed" there model horses, but aren't exactly sure where to begin. For anyone who is just getting into the hobby (or breeding), a logical question to ask would be "Just how do I breed a model horse?" 'Breeding' is not exactly the correct term to use. A better definition would be "pedigree assignment". This is because we are basically just assigning it a sire and dam, who may be a real horse or a model. Here's how to begin assigning your models pedigrees. First off, you should assign only your quality stock pedigrees, since lots of times you can go on to standing your own model horses, and most collectors like to see horses with show records. Also, assigning pedigrees can take some time, so make sure that your time is worth it by assigning your favorite models pedigrees. Next make sure you know the color and breed of your model. Then, go online or look in model horse publications to find Sire and Dam Listings. Lynden Hill Stables offers a Morgan Sire/ Dam list. Most farms offer a variety of breeds and colors, however. Then, look for the breed of your horse, and look at al of the sire and dam listings. Make sure you pay particular attention to color genetics. A usual rule is that either the sire or dam must be the same color as your horse. Also, pay attention to age and open years. A stallion must stand the same year as the mare also. Be sure to try and find the best suitable horses for your model. Then write or email the owner of the selected sire/ dam with the needed information, and you have yourself a pedigree for your model horse!
